Opportunities to craft your narrative from the ground up.
My interests, as well as my literary talents, are diverse. Bring me stories illuminated by the faintest flame of hope in the darkest worlds—that plunge vulnerable characters into the icy depths of their fears, only to reveal strengths tempered along the way. I especially love macabre twists, cosmic and folk horror, and unreliable narrators.
My style of editing is no-nonsense, but also highly constructive. I will highlight your strengths and encourage them to grow, and I will alert you to any and all areas that need reinforcement. I will gently nudge, or encourage aggressive evisceration as needed. Note that my edits are only suggestions, but rest assured that I can help your themes, language, syntax, form, characters, and/or a plethora of other literary devices hit the mark. My developmental edits will guide you toward the root of your message, and my line edits will help your narratives resonate.
I can help you write your next novel, or finally get that short piece on the desk of literary magazine editors. I look forward to the opportunity to read your work and help it flourish into the best version of itself.
Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is my specialty. When reading your piece through the lens of story development, I look for the essentials: are your characters strong? Is your plot pacing assisting the overarching message of your piece? What can be altered in order to make the impact of your work stronger? What are your strongest suits as a writer, and how do we use them to the best of your ability in order to create an authorial voice that is truly, uniquely, yours?
When performing developmental edits, I will be looking at all the “big picture” points that make your story stand out and make a difference. Developmental edits are often the first step, and arguably the most important step, in my editorial process.
Proofreading
Proofreading is, simply, making sure your syntax and the most basic of your facts are correct. Proofreading also focuses a lot on the formatting of the piece itself. When working with me, we have options, here, depending largely on the art you’re creating, and what you’re trying to do with it (i.e., where you’re trying to publish it). As a self-proclaimed post-formalist, I love playing with form, so if you are looking to do something wild and creative with your work, I’d love to get my hands on it and guide you in the right direction. On the flip-side of that coin, I am also well-versed in Shunn Manuscript format, MLA and APA formatting, and working within the Chicago Manual of Style. Proofreading is often the last step in my editorial process.
Copy Editing
In order to copy edit your piece, I will take a deeper dive into your prose. I will focus more heavily on your word choice, your sentence structure, and how all of these elements relate to the writing itself. Copy editing will consist of mostly suggestions via comments, and this type of editing pass typically takes place post-developmental edits.
Line Editing
Line editing is similar to copy editing, but I tend to take a more hands-on approach than suggestions via comments. A typical line editing pass from me would include suggestions for stronger words and sentence structures, encouragements for added context or recommendations for removing lines altogether, and direct manuscript changes (that are tracked, and you still absolutely have the option to reject.) Line editing is where the line starts to blur between copy editing and developmental editing, in that it requires both lenses to truly make an impact on your narrative. I recommend a line editing pass for every piece, regardless of where you are in the publishing stages.
Authenticity Reading
I can offer authenticity reading passes for any pieces that deal with the following subjects:
- The LGBTQIA+ experience.
- Neurological disability.
- Anxiety, depression, ADHD, cPTSD, and certain eating disorders.
- Childhood trauma and repression.
- Pregnancy, childbirth, and PPA, PPD, and PPPTSD.
Technical Copyediting
In addition to fiction, I can provide copyediting services for important professional documents, including but not limited to formal letters, technical guides, presentations (oral and digital), cover letters, and more.
Tutoring
I can provide remote, highly personalized English tutoring for high school and undergraduate students. Parents and students will work with me to create tangible goals and complete necessary projects. My teaching style is very student-led. Using the student’s existing knowledge, I guide them through the process of critical reading, research application, the craft of writing, and the uncovering of their own personal style and voice.
What to Expect
Upon reaching out to me, we will discuss what kinds of edits you are looking for, and I will send you my Service Agreement, which functions as a freelance contract, protecting both you and I. After signing the agreement, I will set out with my edits. I will send you the edited copy based on the timeframe agreed upon in our Agreement, and you will be entitled to one round of complimentary feedback exchange and/or clarification via email. I will recommend any additional editing services I believe the piece may need.
Thank you in advance for trusting me with the art you are creating and setting out into the world. I will treat it with the utmost respect.
